A Royal Navy helicopter heading for a British warship in the Atlantic crashed Wednesday about 200 miles off the Virginia coast, the British Ministry of Defense said.

Two navy fliers were feared dead, but a third crew member who suffered minor injuries was rescued, a department spokeswoman said.

The Lynx helicopter had been heading for Royal Navy warship HMS Richmond when it went down.

A joint U.S.-British search operation was under way to try to recover the pilot and his observer.

The Ministry of Defense spokeswoman said the helicopter had been taking part in a naval exercise, but that she could not immediately provide any more details about the exercise.
