Oracle Chairman and CEO Lawrence J.Ellison said Wednesday that the enterprise software industry is changing rapidly, and only a few of the largest technology providers will be able to survive the fierce competition in the next five years.

The founder of the world's largest software company said technological standards, customer services and localization will be the most competitive areas in the struggle for global market shares.

Addressing the Oracle World Beijing conference, which opened Tuesday, Ellison said the U.S. information technology (IT) industry has matured through consolidation over the past two years. He said Silicon Valley in the U.S. has passed the stage where hundreds of new IT companies crop up every month.

The next big thing expected to happen in the epicenter of the global IT industry will be the emergence of many bio-technology-based companies, he said.

Business software developers should grasp this opportunity by providing information management technology and services to the bio-technology companies, Ellison said.

Oracle ready to develop partners in China
More than 5,000 business leaders, technologists and other interested parties from 26 countries and regions are attending the four-day conference. This is the first Oracle global meeting to be held in China and the largest of its kind in Asia.

Ellison said China is changing rapidly and becoming part of the global economy. He said Oracle is ready to work closely with its partners in China.

He said Chinese software companies and technological solution providers are booming while those in the U.S. have matured and numbers are shrinking. He noted two lines of technological standards represented by Oracle and Microsoft are competing for market shares.

He said it is up to Chinese customers to chose which standard they will adopt in application software.

Oracle will develop partners at all Chinese sectors, ranging from government departments to small businesses, Ellison said. The company will take advantage of the Internet to offer free software and training to Chinese businesses and to set up technical support centers around China.

Oracle opened its first China Development Center in Shenzhen in south China recently. Derek Williams, executive vice president of Asia Pacific Operation, Oracle, said the key points of the company's strategy in China market are "commitment, partnership and localization."
