U.S. President George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush are planning four days of fitness activities next week, hoping Americans would join them in doing more exercises, White House officials said Wednesday.

The White House will invite school children and senior citizens to a Thursday fitness fair on the South Lawn and offer them free diabetes screening, nutritional advice and measurements of their blood-pressure, cholesterol and body mass index.

On the occasion, Bush will introduce new members of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and outline a new initiative to promote regular exercise, healthy eating, disease screening and avoidance of alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs.

On Friday, Bush will travel to Orlando, Florida, to promote exercise programs for senior citizens. On Saturday and Sunday, Bush and his wife will lead a race at Washington's Fort McNair and play host to a game of T-ball in their backyard.

Bush, who runs at least three miles (about 4.8 kilometers) each day, will lead runners in a three-mile run, according to the organizers. Mrs. Bush, who regularly works out in the White House residence, will also lead walkers in a 1.5-mile (about 2.4 kilometers) walk around Fort McNair.

All participants will wear a navy blue T-shirt bearing the words "Walk, run or sprint," which was personally approved by President Bush.

All the entrances of national parks will also be free of charge on June 22-23 "to encourage Americans to hike, walk or just visit our national treasures," said White House press secretary Ari Fleischer.

The U.S. president and first lady are initiating the exercise programs with childhood obesity growing and nearly half of American adults saying they never exercise.
