World Food Summit Ends With Calls for Concrete Actions Against

The four-day World Food Summit ended Thursday in Rome with a call for ensuring concrete actions to achievethe 1996 summit goal of halving the number of the hungry worldwideby 2015.

The four-day World Food Summit ended Thursday in Rome with a call for ensuring concrete actions to achievethe 1996 summit goal of halving the number of the hungry worldwideby 2015.

Speaking at the closing press conference, Jacques Diouf, director-general of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), said he was confident that the objective of last summit can be absolutely achieved with the support of the FAO member states and relevant international organizations.

During the four days of summit, which was chaired by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, a final declaration was unanimously adopted by heads of state and government and representatives from 182 FAO member states, and they also gave presentations on their efforts and actions fighting hunger and participating in international cooperation.

The final declaration called on all FAO member countries and organizations to recognize the urgent need to forge an international alliance against hunger, recalling the political will and commitment pledged by FAO members to achieving food security for all and to an ongoing efforts to eradicate hunger in all countries.

In the following plenary sessions, almost all delegation heads speaking to the summit cited the efforts of their own in eliminating hunger and poverty within their countries as well as participating in international cooperation.

The developed countries, such the United States, the EU and Canada, cited a long list of their assistance to the less-developed countries as well as willingness to continue their work.The developing countries, however, demonstrated to the summit their arduous efforts in eradicating hunger and poverty and calledfor more international assistance.

Apart from plenary sessions, the summit organized side events in parallel, such as roundtables, parliamentarians' day, a privatesector forum and NGO forums, addressing issues like food security,right to food, biodiversity, rural women's role in poverty elimination and sustainable mountain development.
