Sri Lankan Govt, Tamil Rebels Agree on Access to Northern Islands

The Sri Lankan government and separatist Tamil Tiger rebels have reached an agreement over the rebels demand for access to the northern Jaffna islands which are declared military zones by the security forces.

The Sri Lankan government and separatist Tamil Tiger rebels have reached an agreement over the rebels demand for access to the northern Jaffna islands which are declared military zones by the security forces.

The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission spokesman Teitui Torkelsson was quoted by official Daily News as saying on Thursday that the government had agreed to give the rebels access to six of the seven islands for political activity under certain conditions. Access to the island of Manadthivu with a population of 230 people and declared a high military zone will not be accessible to the rebels.

Among the conditions for access to the islands is that the rebels must wear plain clothes and be unarmed. They must also use specific exit and entry points.

The issue of a sea line of communication for the rebels has still to be decided on.
