South China City Hopes to Fetch Record Price for Lychee

Zengcheng City, in south China's Guangdong Province, is hoping to fetch a record price for a special kind of lychee at an auction scheduled to take place in early July.

Zengcheng City, in south China's Guangdong Province, is hoping to fetch a record price for a special kind of lychee at an auction scheduled to take place in early July.

Yang Bohui, deputy head of Zengcheng City Tourism Administration, said more than 20 businessmen, including some fromHong Kong and Macao, will bid at the auction of "xiyuangualu" lychees, made famous as gifts to emperors in ancient China.

With a high rainfall, Zengcheng is an ideal place for quality subtropical fruits such as lychees and longans. It has cultivated40,000 hectares of lychees this year.

The auction is one of many activities the city has planned to attract more tourists.

At last year's auction, a single xiyuangualu lychee fetched a price of 55,000 yuan (6,627 U.S. dollars), making an entry in The Guiness Book of World Records.

During last year's lychee festival, 160,000 tourists visited Zengcheng, boosting the local economy by 98 million yuan (11.81 million U.S. dollars).
