S. Korea Hopes to Resume Dialogue with DPRK Soon

South Korean National Unification Minister Jeong Se-hyun said on Friday that his country hopes to restore dialogue with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) at an early date.

South Korean National Unification Minister Jeong Se-hyun said on Friday that his country hopes to restore dialogue with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) at an early date.

On the eve of the second anniversary of the signing of the North-South Joint Declaration by leaders of South Korea and the DPRK, Jeong Se-hyun, the top representative of Seoul's delegation in charge of the minister-level dialogue with the DPRK, sent a letter to Kim Ryong Song, the DPRK's senior Cabinet Councilor.

In the letter, he urged Pyongyang to resume dialogue between the South and the North at an early date and develop their relations.

The implementation of the declaration is a vital issue directlyconnected with the fate of the nation, he said in the letter.

The authorities of South Korea and the DPRK are duty-bound to overcome any difficulties standing in the way, he said.

Jeong Se-hyun also said that the two sides should foster the spirit of reconciliation and cooperation in the interest of bringing bilateral ties back on track.

The North-South Joint Declaration was signed by DPRK leader KimJong Il and South Korean President Kim Dae-jung in Pyongyang on June 15, 2000. It has played a positive role in easing the tensionon the Korean Peninsula.
