Chinese President Congratulates Karzai on His Election

Chinese President Jiang Zemin Saturday extended his congratulations to Hamid Karzai on his election as president of the Transitional Administration of Afghanistan.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin Saturday extended his congratulations to Hamid Karzai on his election as president of the Transitional Administration of Afghanistan.

In his message of congratulations, President Jiang said the establishment of the Afghan Transitional Administration is another important event in the Afghan peace process, adding that the Chinese people sincerely hope that under the leadership of Karzai and the Transitional Administration, "Afghanistan would achieve lasting peace and stability as soon as possible".

"I am confident that with the joint efforts of our two sides, the good-neighborly and friendly cooperation between China and Afghanistan and their people will have greater development in the new historical period," the president said.

President Jiang is currently on a state visit to Iceland.
