President Jiang in Lithuania to Boost Bilateral Relations
Chinese President Jiang Zemin arrived in Vilnius on Sunday afternoon on a state visit to Lithuania, the first by a Chinese head of state to the Baltic country.

Jiang said in a written speech upon arrival at the airport here following his state visit to Iceland that his current visit to Lithuania is aimed at increasing understanding and common ground, strengthening friendship and promoting cooperation.
Jiang will meet respectively with Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus, Parliament Chairman Arturas Paulauskas and Prime Minister Algirdas Brazauskas. Jiang said he will discuss with them the development of bilateral relations in the new century.
"I believe that with the joint efforts of the two sides, China-Lithuania relations will enjoy new development on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit," Jiang said.
President Adamkus gave Jiang a welcome ceremony on Sunday evening. Adamkus said in a speech at the state banquet in honor ofthe Chinese president that Jiang's visit provides an important opportunity for the two sides to review their bilateral relations over the past 10 years, and to explore new ways of cooperation.
The Lithuanian president said his country hopes to expand cooperation with China in the fields of trade, education, science and technology, culture and tourism.
