The United States has extradited to Egypt a man who was involved in the assassination of Egypt's late president Anwar el-Sadat, a diplomat of the US Embassy in Cairo said on Sunday.

"The defendant, named Nabil Sulaiman, was sentenced in absentia in the case," the diplomat said, adding "he was handed over to the Egyptian authorities on June 12 as part of the U.S.-Egyptian security cooperation."

The U.S. Embassy in Cairo issued a statement on Sunday, saying that "the move came as a result of appropriate judicial procedures as Sulaiman had been living illegally in the United States since 1992."

The statement quoted U.S. Ambassador in Cairo David Welch as saying that "the extradition process was a result of successful bilateral talks that demonstrate the close cooperation between the United States and Egypt in the war against terrorism."

"The move also shows that the U.S. determination to work closely with its allies and friends to fight this epidemic," Welch added.

Meanwhile, a senior security official said that "the accused is a member of Al-Jihad organization and was sentenced in absentia for five years in prison on charge of the assassination of late president Sadat."

"The defendant moved to several countries before he settled in the United States," the official added.
