The government of Madagascar was dissolved on Sunday by President Marc Ravalomanana, local media reported here.

Ravalomanana has appointed Jacques Sylla as prime minister of the Indian Ocean island country, national TV reported.

Madagascar has been split between Ravalomanana and former head of state Didier Ratsiraka since last December, when the country's presidential election was held.

Ravalomanana, who was declared winner of the election by a court in April, was sworn in as president on May 6. But Ratsiraka has rejected the recount result, saying it was biased.

Ratsiraka, who earlier moved his cabinet to the eastern port ofToamasina, left the country for France on Thursday.

Last Sunday, the two rivals held talks in Dakar, capital of Senegal, on the current crisis in Madagascar. But they failed to reach any agreement.
