Sri Lanka's separatist Tamil Tiger rebels will commence political work in the islands off Jaffna peninsula in the north of the country on Monday, according to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM).

SLMM spokesman Teitui Torkelsson said plain clothed unarmed rebels of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) will enter six of the seven islands unaccompanied by truce monitors.

The 7th island Mandaitivu with a high military presence will not be accessible to the LTTE rebels. The rebels will be asked to use specific entry and exit points to the islands and will be subject to normal security procedures.

The checkpoints at the entrance to government controlled areas at Omanthai and Muhamalai will be open at 7 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. six days a week.

Under an indefinite ceasefire agreement entered into between the government and the LTTE rebels in February, the rebels will beallowed to enter government controlled areas and commence political work with a view to take part in the mainstream of political activity.

However, areas declared security zones by the government forceswould be banned to the LTTE rebels. The rebels persisted in their efforts to have the islands open to them and finally succeeded through SLMM mediation except for the single island of Mandaitivu on the ground that it is a high security zone.
