South Korean President Kim Dae-jung's top foreign policy and security adviser is to visit Washington this week for talks on DPRK, the S. Korean presidential Blue House said Monday.

President Bush's administration is gingerly edging toward what would be its first talks in Pyongyang, the capital of the communist North.

South Korea, whose own rapprochement efforts depend heavily on the course of U.S.-DPRK relations, is eager to ensure its voice is heard before those meetings.

Park Sun-sook, Kim's spokeswoman, told reporters Yim Sung-joon, the president's senior secretary for foreign affairs and national security, would visit Washington from June 19 to 21.

The Blue House said in a statement Yim would meet White House National Security adviser Condoleeza Rice to discuss bilateral relations and their respective ties with DPRK.

The statement said Yim would also discuss ways in which South Korea can cooperate with Washington on those talks.

U.S. officials held preliminary talks with DPRK representatives last week and are to discuss with allies Japan and South Korea ideas for more comprehensive negotiations.
