Torrential rains have caused severe floods in the central and northern areas of east China's Fujian Province.

Statistics from the province's Flood Control and Drought Relief Office reveal that from June 11 to 16, a dozen counties' accumulative rainfall had reached 300 millimeters and that of Fuzhou city's Minqing County hit a record high of 353 millimeters.

In Jianning County of Sanming City alone, some 80,000 people were affected by flooding, including nearly 1,000 who were stranded in Junkou Township.

In Minqing County, mountain run-off and mud slides destroyed a 5,000-square-meter food processing plant, but caused no casualties.

Some 20,000 mu (1,333 hectares) of tobacco and 40,000 mu (2,667hectares) of middle season and late rice were washed away.

As this is the highest rainfall since Fujian entered its flood season this year, all relevant departments have been mobilized to fight against the disaster.

Apart from the two disaster relief squads sent out by the Fujian provincial government, there were also two rescue teams dispatched by local armed police.

The Nanjing Military Area Command has provided two helicopters, and maritime satellite telephones offered by local communication departments have been put to use.
