Chinese, Lithuanian Presidents Hold Talks

Chinese President Jiang Zemin said Monday in Vilnius that China will make further efforts to push forward the overall friendly relations with Lithuania on the basis of the five principles of peaceful co-existence.

Jiang made the remarks during his talks with Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus. Jiang arrived in Vilnius Sunday for a state visit, the first by a Chinese head of state to the Baltic nation.

Jiang attributed the smooth development of bilateral relations to the fact that the two countries respect each other's social system, cultural tradition and values, treat each other equally and never interfere in the other's internal affairs.

Adamkus said Jiang's visit represented a milestone in bilateral relations and would further push forward such ties.

The two presidents discussed cooperation in various areas. Jiang proposed that two countries start negotiations as early as possible on signing cooperation agreements on civil aviation, customs and tourism.

Jiang said the two countries should encourage their enterprises to establish direct contacts and expand cooperation in the areas of education, culture and journalism and on international arena.

Adamkus said he agreed with Jiang's proposals and that his country would work with China to promote bilateral relations to a higher level.

Following the meeting, the two presidents attended the signing ceremony of the Extradition Treaty between the two countries.

On the same day, Jiang met with Lithuanian Parliament Chairman Arturas Paulauskas. Jiang said that the exchanges between the National People's Congress of China and the parliament of Lithuania constituted an important part in bilateral political relations. He said China welcomes more Lithuanian members of parliament to visit the country so as to increase the mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

Paulauskas said the parliament of Lithuania observes the one-China policy and attaches great importance to developing relations with China.
