The Pentagon disclosed on Monday that U.S. forces have seized 30 shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles recently in Afghanistan.

The missiles were found in one of the caches of weapons which U.S. forces have searched in the past two weeks or so, Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a briefing.

Myers noted that this was the largest number of missiles the U.S. troops have found in one spot. He said he could not tell whether the missiles were usable or not.

The seizure vindicated recent worries by the U.S. that terrorists may have shoulder-fired missiles which could be used against U.S. military aircraft or civilian airlines operating in Afghanistan.

Addressing the same briefing, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld welcomed latest efforts by Islamabad to provide more helpfor the U.S. in hunting down Taliban and al Qaeda fugitives who reportedly fled into Pakistan.

He said that Pakistan has just added some more troops to areas along its border with Afghanistan.

Islamabad had moved some of its troops from the Pakistani-Afghan border areas to reinforce defense against India in recent weeks because of the crisis with its giant neighbor.
