The United States on Monday urged Lebanon, Syria and Iran to help stop Hezbollah from attacking Israel.

State Department spokesman Richard Boucher told reporters that Washington had sent diplomatic messages to the three countries, asking them to use their influence with Hezbollah to halt such attacks.

"Over the weekend, we were in touch with the Lebanese and the Syrians with that," Boucher said, adding that the U.S. had also conveyed "a similar message to the Iranians."

"We're asking people to prevent things, not to supply weapons, not to allow the supply of weapons, not to encourage and support Hezbollah in carrying out attacks on Israel," the spokesman said.

Washington made the appeal because Hezbollah was reportedly building up stockpiles of weapons in southern Lebanon in an attempt to launch large-scale attacks against Israeli targets.
