British Prime Minister Tony Blair on Monday hold talks with visiting Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and discussed prospects for peace in the Middle East, Blair's office said.

The two leaders met for 30 minutes at Blair's Downing Street office, at the start of Hariri's three-day official visit to Britain.

But Downing Street refused to give any further details of the talks, only saying that they included the topic of the Middle East.

Hariri, who arrived London late Sunday and is expected to leaveon Wednesday, is scheduled to meet with lawmakers, business leaders and Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey, Britain's Foreign Office said.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said Britain had good relations with Lebanon, but was keen to "develop closer working relationships with moderate Middle East leaders such as Prime Minister Hariri".

Although Lebanon did not have a formal role in the Middle East peace process, it was able to play a part in promoting peace and stability in the region, a report here quoted a foreign office spokesman, who spoke on customary condition of anonymity, as saying.

Hariri was scheduled to address the Royal Institute of International Affairs on Monday evening on the subject "Lebanon and Prospects for the Region," the spokesman added.

Hariri, accompanied by Finance Minister Fuad Saniora and Foreign Minister Mahmoud Hammoud, planned to meet with British business executives in an attempt to attract investment to Lebanon.
