President of the ruling Nepali Congress Party Girija Prasad Koirala was removed from his post in the party Tuesday, according to Chiranjibi Wagle, spokesman of theparty's general convention.

The Nepali Congress Party's general convention, which was calledby Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, made a formal resolution to depose Koirala as the party president, Wagle said, adding that as the party president, Koirala cannot control the unstable situationinside the party.

Wagle announced that the proposal to depose the party presidentfrom his post was raised by Deuba and approved by all the participants of the general convention. The election for the new president will be held Wednesday.

"The general convention, which started from Sunday, made the decision after four rounds of talks between the Koirala faction and the mediators within the party," Wagle said, adding that "all the talks collapsed because Koirala showed no flexibility on revoking expulsion of Deuba and some other members from the party."

However, the Koirala faction believed that Deuba had no right to convoke the general convention since he had already been expelled from the party, so it was illegal as it had not followed any party statute and procedures, said Nepali Congress Party spokesman Arjun Narsingh K.C.

Meanwhile in a statement, some general convention participants accused the Deuba government of misusing the power and forcing them to sign in support of the government.

Deuba was expelled on May 26 from the ordinary membership of the Nepali Congress Party for three years by the party's disciplinary committee owing to his announcement on dissolving the House of Representatives without any consultation with the party.
