France Condemns Morning Suicide Attack in Jerusalem

French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin Tuesday condemned the suicide bomb attack in southern Jerusalem that killed 19, including the Palestinian bomber, early in the morning.

French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin Tuesday condemned the suicide bomb attack in southern Jerusalem that killed 19, including the Palestinian bomber, early in the morning.

"I want to express my horror and condemnation at the recent terrorist attack that took place this morning in Jerusalem," said de Villepin.

"Such acts discredit their authors and do harm to the cause they pretend to promote. The Palestinian people must not be taken hostage by the terrorists. Everyone must understand this at the moment when the international community is mobilized to work for peace," he added.

Eighteen civilians were killed and more than 50 injured Tuesday morning when a suicide bomber blew himself up on a crowded bus traveling from the Jewish community of Gilo on Jerusalem's southern outskirts toward the city center. The passengers were mainly school children and office workers.

Reports said that both Tanzim and Al-Aqsa Martyrs, militant wings affiliated to the Palestinian mainstream Fatah movement, claimed responsibility for the suicide attack.

Palestinian officials said the Islamic Resistance Movement, or Hamas, carried out the attack.

The Palestinian National Authority issued a statement denouncing the attack and vowed to bring the attackers and those who collaborate with them to justice.

Israel announced that it has decided to retaliate.
