China's top lawmaker Li Peng said Wednesday that the country's National People's Congress (NPC)attached importance to developing its relationship with Tunisian National Assembly.

China's Top Lawmaker Meets Tunisian Counterpart
China's top lawmaker Li Peng said Wednesday that the country's National People's Congress (NPC)attached importance to developing its relationship with Tunisian National Assembly.

It would learn from the experiences of Tunisia in the development of democracy and legal system, said Li, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, during a meeting with his Tunisian counterpart Fouad Mebazaa in Beijing.

During the meeting, both sides spoke highly of Chinese President Jiang Zemin's visit to Tunisia in April this year.

Li noted that China and Tunisia had made sound progress in bilateral exchanges and cooperation in the political, economic andcultural fields, and the two countries agreed on major international issues.

Since Tunisia had been a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council last year, China and Tunisia had made joint endeavors in maintaining the legal rights and interests of the developing countries, Li stressed.

He said the Chinese side appreciated the support of Tunisia on the issues of Taiwan and human rights.

Mebazaa said that he was glad to continue dialogue with Li on bilateral relations in Beijing following Li's visit to Tunisia sixmonths ago.

He agreed that although they had different backgrounds and domestic situations, Tunisia and China faced the same task of economic development and both held similar views on many major international issues.

He expressed the hope that his visit would further promote cooperation and exchanges in various fields between the two countries.
