Chinese President Meets Tunisian Parliament Leader

China will strengthen cooperation with Tunisia in bilateral and international affairs, Chinese President Jiang Zemin said at a meeting in Beijing on Wednesday with Fouad Mebazaa, president of the National Assembly of Tunisia.

Chinese President Meets Tunisian Parliament Leader
China will strengthen cooperation with Tunisia in bilateral and international affairs, Chinese President Jiang Zemin said at a meeting in Beijing on Wednesday with Fouad Mebazaa, president of the National Assembly of Tunisia.

Jiang spoke positively of Sino-Tunisian friendship and cooperation, pointing to increasing contacts between the two peoples, their expanding cooperative spheres, and the further development of friendship and cooperation in various fields between the two countries in recent years including inter-parliamentary exchanges.

Jiang also praised Tunisia's efforts in sticking to a development path in accordance with its own national conditions.

Mebazaa complimented China on its remarkable progress and said this visit would enhance his country's understanding about China and bilateral cooperation in different areas as it was based on reciprocity and mutual understanding.

He noted that China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, shoulders great responsibilities in international affairs. He hoped the two parliaments would boost mutual understanding and cooperation and strengthen cooperation on international issues.

China and Tunisia
I. Political Relations
China established diplomatic relationship with Tunisia on January 10, 1964. The friendly cooperative relationship between the two countries in all fields is developing steadily. Tunisia attaches importance to the relationship with China, follows China's reform and open policy with interest, maintains high-level visits and other exchanges and develops cooperative partnership with China.

II.Trade
Bilateral trade has been developing steadily. China has provided certain amount of economic aid to Tunisia since 1959. In 2000, the total bilateral trade volume approached US$98.915 million. China mainly exports tea and light industrial products while imports phosphate fertilizer.

III. Exchanges and Cooperation in Culture, Education, Health and Sports
The two governments signed an agreement on cultural cooperation in 1979. Tunisian Foreign Minister visited China in May 1999, and signed The 7th Executive Program of 1999, 2000 and 2001 in accordance with the Agreement on Cultural Cooperation between the two governments.
