U.S. space shuttle Endeavor landed safely in California on Wednesday afternoon, bringing back three record-setting International Space Station residents.
The space shuttle was scheduled to return to Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Monday, but unacceptable weather conditions has forced mission controllers to postpone the landing four times and switch the landing site to Edwards Air Force Base in California.
With Endeavor's touchdown, the Expedition Four crew spent 196 days in space, which gives Flight Engineers Carl Walz and Dan Bursch the U.S. space flight endurance record. The previous recordwas 188 days.
Walz also holds the U.S. record for cumulative time in space with 231 days, and Bursch is second with 227 days. Mission Specialist Franklin Chang-Diaz becomes only the second human to launch into space seven times during this mission.
In addition to delivering the Expedition Five crew to the spacestation, the 12-day flight of Endeavor continued assembly of the orbital outpost.
Two astronauts aboard the space shuttle performed three spacewalks, installing a Mobile Remote Servicer Base System onto the station's Mobile Transporter and replacing a faulty wrist joint on the station's robot arm.
