Tribal Clashes Kill 200 in Congo-Uganda Border Areas

Over 200 people have been killed and 247 houses were burnt during the recent ethnic clashes among the Angar clan of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the Omedo clan of Uganda in western Nebbi district, local media reported on Thursday.

Over 200 people have been killed and 247 houses were burnt during the recent ethnic clashes among the Angar clan of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the Omedo clan of Uganda in western Nebbi district, local media reported on Thursday.

The was revealed by the Nebbi district commissioner Peter Odok W'Oceng during a joint security meeting between officials of Nebbi district and Mahagi territory in the DRC.

W'Oceng said the fight was caused by a Congolese soldier, Abeka Toki, from Aru military barracks in the DRC, who, on returning home in Manjiriko, found that his clan, the Angar, had fought with the Omedo of Uganda and decided to revenue.

He said the insecurity at the border is mainly caused by undisciplined soldiers who harass civilians who either cross the border to visit relatives or take commodities for sale to the markets on the other side.

The meeting, held at Nebbi private sector offices, was attended by Mahagi district commissioner Joseph Orombi and officials from both Nebbi district of Uganda and Mahagi district of the DRC.
