The Indonesian government is preparing to import 250,000 tons of rice from China, which are to be shipped in November-December this year, according to the economic daily Bisnis Indonesia Friday.

State Logistics Agency (Bulog) Chief Widjanarko Puspoyo said he would sign the import contract probably in July while awaiting the decision over whether the purchase was under counter-trade scheme or Government-to-Government (G-to-G) agreement.

"It is possible to import rice on counter-trade scheme, but the agreement signed by the president did not mention it," Puspoyo was quoted as saying.

The agency has secured 8.9 trillion rupiah (around 988.89 million U.S. dollars) for food budget, an increase by 43 percent from the level in 2001. The fund will be disbursed to procure 2.2 million tons of domestic rice and one million tons of imported rice.

Besides China, Bulog's import plan also comprises 500,000 tons from Vietnam, 200,000 tons from Thailand and 50,000 from Cambodia. Thai rice will be purchased under the counter trade agreement.

The Indonesian and Vietnamese governments have agreed on G-to-G rice trading, and of the 500,000-ton import target, only 38,150 tons were left for July shipment.

"Currently all rice imported by Bulog derives from Vietnam," the chief said.
