Sri Lankan Defense Minister Thilak Marapana has said that three committees will be appointed within the next week to make recommendations to strengthen the three services of the armed forces, the official Daily News said on Saturday.

Addressing an air force passing out parade at Diyatalawa, Marapana said that the objective of the committees will be to find out weaknesses and irregularities in the army, navy and air force and compile an intensive report in this regard to make suitable recommendations.

The committee will comprise retired civil and armed forces personnel and their responsibility will focus on recruitment, promotions and posting of persons to important positions in the armed forces, he said.

He said that the promotion systems of the armed forces should be revised to give promotion according to merit and special abilities of the officers instead of confining to seniority.

The minister said that the committees will also be entrusted with the task of making recommendations regarding the formation of the defense system in accordance with the requirement of the country, where the government forces and separatist Tamil rebels are observing an indefinite truce under an agreement signed in February.

Both the government and the rebels are expected to hold peace talks in Thailand in July in a bid to end the country's 19-year ethnic conflict which has claimed over 64,000 lives.
