The United States-based OFS, the world's second largest designer, manufacturer and supplier of cutting-edge fiber optic products, announced here Saturday that it will set up an office in the Chinese capital and expand its business in China.

Eddie Edwards, president and CEO of OFS, said his company would set up a cable factory in China that is expected to be operational in 12 to 18 months. The plant would have access to all of OFS' leading fiber and cable designs, such as the new, cost-saving Dry Core cable, the zero water-peak AllWave fiber and the non-zero dispersion TrueWave fiber.

Industry sources predict China will install a total of 65 million km of cable throughout its fiber optic network by 2005. Demand for fiber is expected to grow by 11 percent annually from 11 million km in 2001 to 16 million km in 2005.

Edwards believes the fiber optic products market in China shows promise because of the burgeoning growth of China's information industry. Therefore his company will not only expand its business in China, but also bring "cutting-edge technology and award- winning products" to China.

OFS' products are already used in the networks of China's major service providers including China Telecom, China Mobile, China Netcom, and China Unicom.
