Sri Lankan navy will take precautionary measures to prevent recurrence of incidents of violation of truce agreement signed by the government and separatist Tamil Tiger as two rebels are alleged to have been attacked by the navy personnel in the north of the country.

The navy said in a statement issued on Sunday that no definite conclusion on the involvement of the navy personnel in the incident has been arrived at but allegations have been directed atnavy involvement.

Two senior members of the political wing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were assaulted in Kayts island off Jaffna peninsula in the north on Thursday night. When they were tobe arrested they tried to swallow cyanide capsules but the villagers prevented them from being arrested and swallowing cyanide.

The result came after a meeting of Chief of Staff of the navy Rear Admiral Mohan Wijewickrama with commanders of the government forces and the navy in the north, representatives of the LTTE and head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM).

The navy chief of staff warned the navy personnel that violations of the ceasefire agreement would not be tolerated and he emphasized the need to be extra vigilant to ensure harmony withall concerned parties with a view to making the Norwegian-brokeredpeace process a success.

The navy requested the ministry of defense to undertake an independent inquiry besides their own through a committee appointed by the government.

The SLMM has agreed to open an office in Kayts island in the north to enable speedier responses to any breach of the ceasefire agreement.

The government and the LTTE rebels have been observing ceasefire since last December without any serious incidents. Both sides are expected to hold direct peace talks in Thailand in July.
