Former president of Madagascar Didier Ratsiraka said Saturday he is the rightful leader of the Indian Ocean island country, according to a local report Sunday.

Ratsiraka returned to Madagascar Saturday from Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia, after attending a summit there with his rival, incumbent President Marc Ravalomanana, on the current crisis of the island.

The summit, attended by Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa, current chairman of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the presidents of Tanzania, Mozambique and Senegal, and Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, mainly discussed an OAU plan to diffuse the crisis in Madagascar.

Madagascar has been split between Ravalomanana and Ratsiraka since last December, when the country's presidential election was held.

Ravalomanana, who was declared winner of the election by a court in April, was sworn in as president on May 6. But Ratsiraka has rejected the recount result, saying it was biased.

Ratsiraka left Madagascar to Paris on June 14 as the forces of Ravalomanana took control of more territory of the country.

The two rivals had held talks in Dakar, capital of Senegal, on the current crisis in Madagascar. But they failed to reach any agreement.
