Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad left Kuala Lumpur Sunday for a week-long vacation in Europe.

His press secretary Zakaria Abdul Wahab said Mahathir, accompanied by his wife, left the Royal Malaysia Air Force (RMAF) base in Subang on board a government executive aircraft in the morning.

Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, religious advisor to the prime minister Abdul Hamid Othman and staff of the Prime Minister's office were among those who sent him off.

Mahathir, also President of the ruling United Malays National Organization (UMNO), was originally scheduled to depart for the vacation Sunday night.

Saturday, he shocked the nation by announcing his resignation from all posts in UMNO on the final day of the UMNO general assembly but retracted his decision following appeals by the party supreme council members.
