A charter bus crashed on a New York state highway Sunday, killing five people, police said.

Forty-four people were on board the Arrowhead Coach USA bus, which was traveling from Niagara Falls to Waterbury, Conn. Two other vehicles also wrecked.

Ambulances and medical helicopters were on the scene on the New York State Thruway, 16 miles south of Rochester.

Twenty-three people were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. They ranged in age from 11 months to 60 years old; seven were younger than 16.

Four were critically injured but were expected to survive, and an 18-month-old child suffered a blow to the chest but was expected to recover, state police Maj. Mark Fisher said.

The driver, who did not appear seriously hurt, indicated he had a diabetic condition, which may have played a part in the accident, Fisher said.

Several passengers told the driver to pull over just before the crash but he did not, Fisher said. It was unclear why the passengers asked the driver to pull over.

No charges have been filed against the driver, who missed his exit. The bus then slammed into a guardrail around 3 p.m., becoming airborne and hitting another guardrail before rolling down an embankment, said State Trooper Gary Link said.

A minivan caught in the accident overturned and another car was hit by a guardrail that broke free after the bus slammed into it. Passengers in those vehicles reported only minor injuries.

By Sunday night, emergency crews were still working to lift the bus, which was still rolled over on its side. The five dead were found in the center of the bus and all were ejected or partially ejected, Fisher said.

Waterbury Mayor Michael Jarjura said the bus was chartered for a group from the Church of God Prophecy in Waterbury, WTNH-TV in Connecticut reported.
