Liu Zhibing, former vice-chairman of the People's Government of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Regionin southwest China, was sentenced Monday to 15 years imprisonment for taking bribes.

The Intermediate Court of Nanning in the regional capital handed down the sentence Monday. Liu was also deprived of political rights for three years and was fined 250,000 yuan (30,120 U.S. dollars).

The court found Liu abused his power and took 866,322 yuan (104,376 U.S. dollars) in bribes between 1993 and 1999, when he was a senior leader in Liuzhou, an industrial city in Guangxi.

The court mitigated Liu's sentence, because he gave himself up to the court and returned his illegal earnings.
