U.S. President George W. Bush left Washington on Tuesday to attend a summit meeting of the Group of Eight (G8) scheduled to be held in Canada on Wednesday and Thursday.

Before heading for Canada, however, the U.S. president made a hastily arranged detour visit to Arizona to get an aerial view of a devastating wildfire that has so far burned more than 351,000 acres (about 140,000 hectares).

Shortly before his departure for the western U.S. state, Bush declared parts of Arizona a major disaster area in wake of the biggest blaze in the state's history.

The disaster declaration makes the affected areas eligible for 20 million U.S. dollars in emergency aid. Flames have destroyed atleast 375 homes and 16 businesses and displaced 30,000 people in at least 11 communities.

The G8 summit, to be attended by leaders of the U.S., Canada, Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Japan and Russia, is expected to focus on the war against terrorism as well as assistance to Africa.

Bush, who announced a new Middle East peace plan on Monday, is also expected to seek support for his initiative from other G8 leaders.
