The South Korean government is pushing to host inter-Korean football games on a regular basis from this year as part of post-World Cup measures.

According to government officials, Seoul's plan is to have inter-Korean games at the 10 venues of the World Cup finals in the South. The 10 venues include stadiums in Seoul, Suwon, Kwangju and Pusan.

In September, the national squads of the two Koreas are scheduled to hold a game in Seoul.

"Football can be a good alternative to politics," a government official said, adding that there will be a proposal to that effect made to Pyongyang soon.

Meanwhile, Seoul is planning to talk with Tokyo and Beijing about holding joint professional football league matches between the three countries, officials said.

Presiding over a weekly Cabinet meeting, President Kim Dae-jung said, "It is important to activate football exchanges between the Koreas, China and Japan, as part of efforts to upgrade our level of football."

The football associations of the three countries are engaged in consultations aimed at holding a series of matches involving the winning teams of the three countries professional leagues.

These plans are being pushed as part of Seoul's efforts to capitalize on the benefits of hosting a successful World Cup in its post-World Cup package of steps.

In the Cabinet meeting, President Kim emphasized that it was time for the country to look beyond the ongoing World Cup finals and prepare itself for the ``second World Cup aimed at cashing in on the improved national image and strengthened brand power of its products.
