Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to appoint a three-member independent commission to probe Tamil Tiger rebel complaints that their members were attacked by a group of government forces personnel in northern Kayts island last Friday.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels had complained to the ceasefire monitoring mission in the country who in turn made representations to the prime minister, the official Daily News reported on Wednesday.

The three-member committee, which will comprise a representative each of the government, the monitoring mission and the LTTE rebels, has been entrusted to complete their inquiry and compile a comprehensive report on their findings and make recommendations regarding the incident within 14 days.

In addition to the special commission of inquiry, separate investigations are being carried out by a team of joint military forces personnel.

These investigations will ascertain whether army and navy personnel have disobeyed their superiors and will take disciplinary action against the involved parties.
