Chinese and Guyanan leaders exchanged congratulatory messages on Thursday to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

In a message to his Guyanan counterpart, Bharrat Jagdeo, Chinese President Jiang Zemin said: "Over the past 30 years, the relationship of friendly cooperation between China and Guyana has enjoyed sustained development. Friendship between the two peoples is deepened. And fruitful cooperation in the political, economic, scientific, cultural, educational and other fields has been successfully carried out."

Jiang noted that China and Guyana have been supporting and closely coordinating with each other in international affairs. As developing countries, both China and Guyana hold common views on such important issues as maintenance of world peace and promotion of common development.

"Further development of our friendly cooperative relations is in conformity with the fundamental interests of the two peoples and is conducive to world peace and development," Jiang said, adding that China is willing to explore and expand, together with Guyana, new areas of cooperation on the basis of the five principles of peaceful coexistence, and make efforts to enrich and

deepen such cooperation, so as to push the relationship of friendly cooperation to a new high.

Also in his message, Jiang said China appreciates Guyanan government's continued support to the Chinese government on the Taiwan issue.

Echoing Jiang's views, Jagdeo said in his message that Guyana is proud to have been the first English-speaking country in the Caribbean to establish diplomatic relations with China.

The affinity which the two countries enjoy in their bilateral relations is reflected at the multilateral level where they work together in the interest of global peace and development, Jagdeo said.

"It is my fervent hope that the friendly and cooperative relations which Guyana and China have enjoyed over the past three decades will be further strengthened in the years ahead," he added.

Jagdeo also said that at the United Nations and in other fora such as the G77, the two countries have together advanced the principles of social justice, equitable development, the preservation of sovereignty and territorial integrity and the rule

of law, emphasizing that Guyana will continue to support the "One China" policy.

Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan also sent a message on the same day to his Guyanan counterpart, Samuel R.Insanally, to mark the occasion.
