China Mobile is going to put MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) into operation on October 1, and China Unicom's CDMAIX network will be operational this September.

China's multimedia messaging service is able to advance in step with the world if MMS is put into operation on time. Sources reveal European's service started in the middle of 2002. This is also true of Asia, Hong Kong CSL is the first company to offer such service this April. Singapore Mobile One will start to provide it this September.

Quanzhou, a city of Fujian Province, is the first area to conduct pilot MMS in China. It established the network last August but hasn't provided the service yet.

There are the following two reasons explaining why China Mobile places high hopes on MMS: First, the current number of China Mobile users amounts to 160 million; Second, the SMS (Short Messaging Service) market is booming during the 2002 World Cup period, with a daily average of 1000 GPRS users applying for opening service.

Related reports show Singapore Mobile One spent only US$ 2 million on setting up an MMS network compared with the estimated high cost of US$ 39.3 billion on 3G this year. Therefore, no wonder MMS is regarded as a magic that requires less inputs but yields high returns.

Regarding the domestic market, competition still exists. As China Mobile's rival, China Unicom is expected to put its CDMAIX network into operation at the end of this year or in the beginning of next year. But insiders reveal the network is likely to start operation this September, when CDMA handsets are able to log on the Internet and send and receive emails through it.

If MMS is really a magic, it is certain that China Unicom will not give it up.
