Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President George W. Bush on Thursday agreed on an enhanced cooperation on the fight against terrorism as leaders from the Group of Eight (G-8) nations met to wrap up their two- day summit in Kananaskis, a retreat of the Canadian Rockies.

The two leaders, holding face-to-face talks at the summit, exchanged ideas and commitments to combating terrorism.

"Unfortunately, terrorism is of a global nature," said Putin, adding that joint efforts are essential if Russia and the United States want to be successful in the terrorism fight.

During their talks, Bush described the Russian president as a " stalwart in this fight against terrorism."

Observers here believe that Putin was emerging as one of the summit's big winners. The United States and its G-8 allies were close to a deal to provide 20 billion U.S. dollars in support over the next decade to help Russia dispose of its aging nuclear stockpile and keep it out of the hands of terrorists.

The world's powerful leaders shifted their attention Thursday to an action plan to help Africa, the world's poorest continent. But after the talk was over the summit was preoccupied with Bush's latest Middle East peace plan and his allies' hesitance to accept the U.S. stance that an separate Palestinian state is the only solution if Palestinians replace Yasser Arafat as their leader.
