The Thai General Education Department planned to add Chinese-language classes into the curriculum of up to 100 schools in the next academic year, the Bangkok Post reported Thursday.

It is a part of the department's project to promote study of Chinese at state-run middle schools, the report said, adding that the project aims to make 30 percent of the 2,500 middle schools under the department nationwide to provide Chinese education.

In the first stage the department would focus on provinces withlarge Chinese communities such as Trang, Surat Thani, Songkhla, Chiang Rai and Bangkok, the report said.

Suwat Saktrisul, an official of the department's planning division, was quoted as saying that the department would make schools understand how it is important for them to provide foreignlanguages other than English.

The department has signed an agreement with China's Education Ministry which would give 40 scholarships to Thai teachers who know basic Chinese to attend intensive three-week courses at Yunnan University.

The department was also working with Chulalongkorn University and Hua Chiew Chalermphrakiart University to promote Chinese education.

Meanwhile, Suwat said the department would ask the Finance Ministry to approve its plan to pay a high salary to native speakers of foreign languages.
