About 50,000-60,000 malformed babies were born the last few years to show a year-on-year rising abnormal rate in Guangxi, according to news from a study class for prevention of abnormal newborns.

A survey locally conducted 1996-2001 show that during those 6 years 1,550 were born abnormally out of 101,594 newborns pointing to 152.57 abnormal new-born babies out of every 10,000 newborns in the province.

Meanwhile 722 newborns had died of abnormalities over the 6 years.

Experts say that the major reason for the high rate of malformed newborns is due to a low pre-marital check rate and a low rate of childbirth also results in the increased number of malformed newborns in Guangxi.
