20 Killed in Ammunitions Depot Explosion in Southern Afghan Town

A munitions depot in southern Afghan town of Spinboldak, bordering Pakistan's Chaman check post,exploded in wee hours on Friday, killing at least 20 people on the spot.

A munitions depot in southern Afghan town of Spinboldak, bordering Pakistan's Chaman check post,exploded in wee hours on Friday, killing at least 20 people on the spot.

Official sources say the explosion is suspected to be a terrorist act according to initial investigations.

"The depot was blown by al-Qaeda fugitives," said a border security force official. He added that there were intelligence reports that Taliban's leader Mullah Omar was getting ready to attack the area, which is just 110 kilometers from his hometown ofKandahar.

The rockets, bombs and other ammunition kept on shooting in allthe directions, eyewitnesses said.

"One Pakistani border security soldier was also injured seriously when a rocket made its way from the depot to the nearby Pakistani check post," sources said

The Fire Brigade squad at Chaman rushed to the area to overcomethe fire. The rescue teams from Pakistan have also been working inSpinboldak to rescue the people and dead bodies.

Spinboldak located almost 420 kilometers from Kabul and is justfive kilometers from Pakistan city of Chaman.

The killed include mostly women and children and yet more causalities are expected. The injured include six Afghan troops. The explosions destroyed several buildings in the town, and more victims were believed to be buried under rubble.
