Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa Friday unearthed a scam in which a well-known group of disgruntled citizens are plotting a coup to remove him from power and assassinate him.

Mwanawasa was speaking when he addressed the press at the State House, the country's presidential office.

Mwanawasa has since banned all the ruling Movement for Multi- party Democracy (MMD) cadres from escorting and receiving him at the airport whenever he leaves or comes in the country.

He said while he appreciated the welcome he received from the cadres, there was need to be careful as it was easy to have undesirable characters among them.

The Zambian president also called on all Zambians not to be surprised when he starts taking the citizens concerned to court to be tried for treason.

Mwanawasa explained he had been aware of a coup that was being planned to assassinate him and others working with him for some time now and warned the perpetrators that they were being watched.

He said his officers had since been notified of the plan and asked to keep a close eye on those that were scheming to remove and assassinate him.

However, Mwanawasa said he would not declare a state of emergency because the people involved in the scam were too small.

He explained plans to eliminate him were as a result of the programs to cleanse the nation of all evil that his government had embarked on.

Mwanawasa said he had embarked on those programs not because he hated the perpetrators of the wrongs but because of the love he had for Zambia.

He said Zambia should not have been as poor as it is today if all money was accounted for.

Mwanawasa maintained he would not allow the plundering of the economy even if it meant him being assassinated.

He said he was not scared to die as long as it was for a just cause.

He added that even if he was assassinated, three-quarters of his cabinet were in agreement with his policy and would therefore take over from where he would have left to ensure the program succeeds.
