pensioner Yang Genming heard the city was bidding to host the World Expo 2010, he got on his bike and left town.
He cycled 7,000 kilometers around China in 88 days, whipping up support for Shanghai's attempt to win the international trade fair.
Returning to his home on the east bank of the Huangpu River, he immediately attracted a crowd of more than 160 people and briefed them on his tour.
"I covered 7,000 kilometers in 88 days, and in the end I lost eight kilograms in weight," the 65-year-old said. "I had the courage to do this because I am a citizen of Shanghai, and the bid for the World Expo is the business of all people in Shanghai and China."
Yang was satisfied with his experience: "I have endured lots of hardships on the way, but I am happy in heart. Many people first heard about the Expo from me, and it was a good chance for me to appreciate to my heart's content the beauty of our country."
The man showed his collection of signatures on a World Expo 2010 bid brochure. On it there are signatures in both Chinese characters and ethnic minority pictographs, and postmarks and seals of local governments along the way are witness to his trip.
"These signatures are the best proof of the strong support of the Chinese people for the World Expo bid," said Yang.
"If we win the bid, our living environments and quality of life will surely be greatly improved.
"Most people on the road were interested in my introduction to the event, because the World Expo has never been held in China. Our common wish is that through the Expo, we'll increase exchanges with the outside world and see with our own eyes the most advanced technology in the world."
