Hong Kong Plays Significant Role in Cross-Straits Ties : Qian Qichen

Although the "One Country, Two Systems" was put forward for solving the Taiwan issue, it was first carried out in Hong Kong, however, the successful implementation of the policy will be of great significance in removing Taiwan's misunderstanding and suspicion about the policy, said vice premier Qian Qichen.

Although the "One Country, Two Systems" was put forward for solving the Taiwan issue, it was first carried out in Hong Kong.

However, the successful implementation of the policy will of great significance in removing Taiwan's misunderstanding and suspicion about the policy, said vice premier Qian Qichen.

Qian made the remark in an interview with Hong Kong's Ta Kung Pao on June 25.

Qian said that the successful practice of the policy in Hong Kong has proved that Hong Kong's original social system does not change, people's life style does not change, economic and cultural exchanges with the outside do not change.

Citizens are enjoying democratic rights and broader freedom, they have witnessed that the central government is managing the region in the light of basic law, the region's high degree of autonomy is fully respected.

Qian pointed out that Hong Kong has exerted a great role in economic, cultural exchanges with mainland in the five years since it was resumed in 1997.

Hong Kong will still play an important role in keeping the good momentum between the region and mainland after China and Taiwan join the WTO.

So far, various exchanges between Hong Kong and Taiwan have seen further growth, business relations between the two also leap to a new level.

The close contacts between Hong Kong and Taiwan will be contributive for China's reunification, said the vice premier.

When talking about the region's future development, Qian expressed supports for the accountability system, which he thinks is good for overcoming difficulties ahead.
