SUEZ, the world's leading company in energy, water and waste services, said on Saturday in Paris that it will set up its Asian headquarters in Shanghai, China.

Gerard Mestrallet, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of SUEZ, announced this when meeting with visiting Mayor of Shanghai Chen Liangyu, who arrived here on Friday to present Shanghai's bid to host the 2010 World Exposition.

"As France's leader in water-related services, SUEZ attaches importance to the economic perspective of China and has noticed the growth of Shanghai in recent years, as well as its promising future," said Mestrallet.

"In order to better cooperate with China in the fields of water, energy and waste services, SUEZ has decided to set its Asian headquarters in Shanghai," he said.

Mestrallet also said his company fully supported Shanghai's bid to host the World Exposition in 2010.

Chen said he is confident that cooperation between SUEZ and Shanghai will expand.

The mayor and his delegation are to present the document of Shanghai Expo 2010 to the 131st general assembly of the Bureau on International Exposition (BIE), on July 2.

On the same day, Moscow, Mexico City, Poland's Wroclow and South Korea's Yeoso will also present their plans for the event in 2010 to the Paris-based organization.

Since the BIE was founded 150 years ago, no large-scale world exposition has been held in a developing country.

The 88 members of the BIE will vote in December to decide the host city of the World Expo 2010.
