Over 130 Die in Torrential Rains in India

Monsoon continued to wreck havocin west India's Gujarat and Maharashtra states with the number of deaths swelling to over 130, local TV reported Sunday.

The death toll in Gujarat rose to 49 Saturday as fresh deaths were reported from Bhavnagar, Junagadh, Rajkot, Navsari and Valsaddistricts. Local officials said that over 19,000 people have beenshifted to safer places.

In Maharashtra, the toll in Thane district rose to 53 and it was expected to rise further. Officials said 12 more casualties were reported from Nagpur division, 10 from Aurangabad, five each from Nashik and Amravati, and four from Pune.

The state government announced an ex-gratia payment of 50,000 rupees (1,030 U.S. dollars) for the kin of those killed since Tuesday's torrential rains.

Meanwhile, long-distance trains of the Western Railway remainedcancelled.
