At least 11 people were killed and 34 injured when their Hardwar-bound bus fell into a valley near Joshimuth of Uttaranchal in north India Sunday morning, police said.

This was the second major accident within a fortnight in Chamoli district involving pilgrims.

Police said that most of the pilgrims belonging to Sikh community were returning from Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib shrines when the accident occurred.

While nine people died on the spot, two succumbed to injuries on way to hospital, police said, adding the injured have been admitted to hospitals in the district.

The private bus, carrying 45 pilgrims, belonged to Jammu and Kashmir.

On June 16, 26 pilgrims were drowned when a private bus in which they were returning from Badrinath shrine skidded off the road and plunged into Alaknanda river at Baldora area in Chamoli district, according to the Press Trust of India.
