Russian Rocket 'Smerch' System Test Fired in India

A Russian rocket system named Smerch was successfully test fired Saturday from the Interim Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur-on-sea in east India's Orissa state, the Press Trust of India reported Sunday.

A Russian rocket system named Smerch was successfully test fired Saturday from the Interim Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur-on-sea in east India's Orissa state, the Press Trust of India reported Sunday.

The rocket is said to have a range of 70 kilometers to 90 kilometers. The fully developed Russian rocket was launched from aspecially designed launcher positioned at the launch complex No. 2of the ITR.

The rocket also has the capability of launching surface to surface and surface to air missiles. About 20 to 30 Russian scientists and technicians along with Indian defense scientists were present at the time of the test.
