The powerful earthquake that shook northeastern China this weekend caused no injuries or significant damage in the region primarily because it was located so far under the earth's surface, a seismological official said Sunday.

A day after the 7.2-magnitude quake, the provincial government in Jilin had received absolutely no reports of casualties or damage to buildings, said an official with the Jilin Seismological Bureau, reached by telephone Sunday morning. He gave only his surname, Shao.

He also said no houses were damaged in the province, part of the northeastern China region.

A quake of such a large magnitude can cause massive damage and loss of life if centered close to the surface and near populated areas. But experts said the temblor Saturday morning was so deeply underground that it wrought little havoc.

Seismological experts in Changchun, the capital of Jilin province, said after the tremor that they see little possibility of any earthquake causing major damage in the region in the near future, the official Xinhua News Agency said Sunday.

Dong Jichuan, director of the Jilin Seismological Bureau, said only three strong earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.6, 5.2 and 7.0 respectively jolted the province in 1960, 1966 and 1999.

Xinhua said the tremor Saturday was felt as far away as Zhejiang province, on China's east coast 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles) south of the epicenter.
