President Jiang Meets with Tung Chee Hwa

Chinese President Jiang Zemin met Sunday afternoon with Tung Chee Hwa, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.

Jiang said he was satisfied with the successful implementation of the "one country, two systems" principle in Hong Kong since Hong Kong's return to the motherland five years ago.

He said the Central Government will always give full support and assistance to Hong Kong to maintain Hong Kong's prosperity and stability in accordance with the principle.

He encouraged Tung and the second-term government of the HKSAR to make further efforts to do an even better job.

Tung was grateful for Jiang's concern for Hong Kong and his solicitude for Hong Kong people, and said he is confident in leading the HKSAR government and Hong Kong people to meet challenges ahead and open up a new prospect of economic development.

Tung Appreciates Central Government's Firm Support

Tung Chee Hwa said that with a strong motherland behind, firm support from the Central Government and hard work of its people, Hong Kong's future would surely be as bright as that of the whole country.

On behalf of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) government, Tung extended a warm welcome and expressed thanks to Jiang for his presence in Hong Kong.

Speaking of the experience over the past five years, Tung said it is very important to maintain Hong Kong's political and social stability. To attain this goal, the SAR government should not only adhere to the rule of law and improve the legal system, but also improve its administration with each passing day and win popular support of the public, he said.

Tung also emphasized the importance of focusing efforts on Hong Kong's economic development, because sustained economic growth is crucial to maintaining social and political stability, improving the standards of living and maintaining people's confidence.

It is imperative for the Hong Kong SAR government to try its best and take various effective measures to make economic restructuring a success and enable Hong Kong to overcome difficulties, Tung added.

Tung said that the mainland's development and the support from the whole country are of great significance. The rapid economic development and the increasingly rising international status of China have given great encouragement to Hong Kong, and it is very lucky for Hong Kong to have returned to the motherland at a time when China has become strong and prosperous, he said.
